What resolution does it support?

It depends on the model: the supported resolution (for example 1080p or 4K@60Hz) is in the title.

Does VGA carry sound?

No. VGA carries video only, so use your laptop speakers or a separate audio cable. HDMI and Mini DisplayPort carry video and sound.

Which one do I need?

Check the ports on both ends. Laptop with Mini DisplayPort and a TV or monitor with HDMI: Mini DisplayPort to HDMI. Older projector with VGA: Mini DisplayPort to VGA. Both devices with HDMI: an HDMI cable.
